Lip Syncing

As the music track will have been recorded separately to the music video, artists have to lip sync along to the track, if they include any singing performance shot in their videos.

Lip syncing is where a person mimes or actually sings along to the lyrics of the chosen song and then the footage is muted during the editing process, and the music track is played over it. The music track has to be aligned perfectly so that it fits with what the person is miming, so that it appears as if they are actually singing the song during the video.

Lip syncing is important in a lot of videos, as the artist want it to appears if the final product has been all live performance shots, but obviously this would not work well as the quality of audio that would be recorded on a camera alone would not be adequate and be nothing compared to the studio quality track.


Here is a music video from a band, with clear lip syncing included. In between the narrative shots, there are band performance shots where the singers have been recorded lip-syncing and then the footage has been muted and the song matched up perfectly so that it appears as if they are singing along:
